Human melanoma cells (A-375, a malignant melanoma cell line derived from the skin of a 54 year old female), are one of many possible cell lines used to screen materials for anti-cancer capabilities.  Materials are screened based upon their abilities to exert strong anti-proliferative or pro-apoptotic effect on tumor cells while having minimal effects on normal, non-cancerous cells
