Overview of DNA Microarrays
DNA microarrays can be run using cultured cells or tissues as the source of RNA. The procedure typically involves a 12 to 24 hour treatment with the test materials followed by 2-3 days for RNA isolation and amplification. After hybridization, the DNA microarray chip can be scanned to determine which genes are differentially expressed in response to the materials tested. Many of the cell and tissue types used as models in this lab have been characterized via DNA microarray analysis and the data is available to answer any questions on their gene expression profiles. In addition, there is also a link to our article in the 2006 issue of Cosmetic Science and Technology entitled "DNA Microarrays: Application to the Cosmetic and Person Health Care Industries." Our lab typically uses the Agilent Human 22k Gene Chip for microarray analysis. A listing of the gene chip contents in an excel format can be downloaded from the link below: Agilent Chip Description (Excel file, 7.2 mb)
